In the Papers!

What an honor to be featured by the Standard-Examiner Newspaper! Their article highlighted our Leadership Projects - specifically our special partnership with ARUP Blood Services. The reporter interviewed our School Owner and Head Instructor, Master Cherith Shiba; Clearfield City Councilman and Shiba Taekwondo Dad, Tim Roper; and the students who led our latest leadership project, siblings Ryen and Owen Smith.

At Shiba Taekwondo, service to our community is a priority. This is reflected by all students leading their classmates in a service project prior to earning their black belt. The moment our students step on the mat for the first time, we purposefully begin teaching them to be leaders: amongst their peers, in their schools, in the workplace and in their communities.

At around Blue Belt, our students each choose a project that is meaningful to them and that simultaneously gives back to the community. They quickly gain real life leadership skills as they coordinate and implement their project. Once Master Shiba approves the project, she assigns a current black belt to mentor the student through the process. She, in turn, mentors the black belt. Leadership training is woven throughout everything we do!

Much like a project manager, our students coordinate with the organization they’ve chosen to serve. They also coordinate internally with their instructors and fellow students to explain the project and solicit sign-ups to work the project. This involves, with excellence, scheduling, communicating needs and opportunities to serve, recruiting, training, assigning and inspiring their classmates to come alongside them.

As always, when you do something worthy, there are added rewards! The community is served, our school draws together working toward a common goal. This helps us to be a family. Community!
